The Shrek movies series, and in particular the first film, has received some criticism.
None of the films have gotten the highest rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, they have all received positive critical reviews (except for Puss in Boots).
I have found very few people who have continuously hated the movies. The Shrek movies series is also a great source for humor in my opinion.
I love the humor that it provides and it's one of my top favorite movie series ever. If you haven't seen these films, then you are missing out on a lot of laughs!

Has 'Shrek 5' Been Canceled?
Rumors have been swirling for years now about whether or not "Shrek" will make a comeback to the big screen.
After all, the green ogre has been absent from the big screen for over 10 years now. However, there may be some good news on the horizon for fans of the ogre.
According to a report by The Guardian, a new "Shrek" movie is in development and it is set to release in 2023. This would be the first "Shrek" movie since 2010's "Shrek Forever After ."
So far, no other details about these movies have been released. It is unclear whether or not they will continue the story of Fiona, Donkey Kong, and Princess Fiona or if they will be separate movies.
However, fans of "Shrek" are excited about the possibility of a return to the big screen.
Some fans have been very vocal in their desire for a return to the franchise, especially with the untimely death of the ogre. However, it is unclear whether or not these new movies will live up to expectations.
The last movie even received a lot of negative reviews and was seen as a disappointment by many.
A lot of fans believe that some changes need to be made in order to make a successful movie franchise again. For example, they believe that the way "Shrek" was filmed and handled was better than what "The Croods" portrayed.
Shrek Movies In Order
There are currently five “Shrek” movies. The first, released in 2001, was followed by three more sequels: Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), Shrek the halls (2007) and Shrek Forever After (2010).
This leaves an odd gap in the series where one would expect a sixth movie to come out, but no such film has been announced. It is possible that a sixth movie could happen, but it’s also possible that there will never be another “Shrek” movie.
The first movie was a financial success, but the series has declined in popularity since then.
The characters have developed a strong fan base in the form of toys and plushies, but it’s not accurate to say that the movies are any less popular than they were 15 years ago.
“Shrek Forever After” made $440 million worldwide, which is nearly double (and still significantly more than) how much “Shrek Forever After” made when it came out two years earlier.
If you believe merchandise sales are an accurate prediction for how well a movie will do at the box office, then there’s no reason to think that another “Shrek” movie wouldn’t be profitable as well.
This is all to say that “Shrek Forever After” isn’t a bad movie, and it doesn’t need an apology. It just needs to be taken out of the “The Simpsons Movie” category.
“Shrek Forever After” hits every note that audiences expect from a “Shrek” movie, and it delivers exactly what they want.
In the context of this universe it is a success thanks to its story, but if you were expecting to see Shrek perform magic again, then you are going to be disappointed.
An Overview Of Shrek Movies
The "Shrek" movies are a series of animated films released between 2001 and 2010. There are currently five movies in the series, with the first released in 2001 and the most recent released in 2010. Each movie is approximately 90 minutes long.
The order in which they were released is as follows: "Shrek", "The Shrek Forever After", "Shrek 2", "Shrek 3", and "Shrek 4". The main character in the first movie is Shrek, a green ogre who lives in a swamp and works as a swamp dweller.
He was once the most feared monster in the swamp but has since lost his power due to his own laziness and gluttony.
The second movie introduces Princess Fiona, an adventurous princess from another land that Shrek rescues from being thrown into a dragon's mouth by Lord Farquaad, the ruler of her kingdom.
"Shrek 2" takes place approximately one year after the events of "Shrek", and it follows Shrek's attempts at winning Fiona back after he accidentally falls in love with Puss in Boots.
"Shrek 3" takes place almost exactly three years after the events of "Shrek 2", and it follows Shrek's life with Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and his daughter Princess Fiona. "Shrek Forever After" is set after the events of "Shrek the Third".
It seems Shrek has grown old and passed away due to years of living with carelessness when his rescue by Fiona comes back to bite him.
As he meets up with Fiona again as an adult, he learns that she is engaged to be married to Prince Charming who was once a frog prince before he became human.
The plot of each film has diverged from the others in various ways, but it has been generally established that all four films share the same world background.
The first film takes place on an alternate version of the European fairy tale world where the characters are, like their counterparts and, all anthropomorphized creatures.
The second film ignores this and instead introduces a new main character: Shrek, an ogre who is depicted as an ogre with many characteristics that are characteristic of the traditional fairy tale ogre from which he takes inspiration from.
The series has spawned two video games for PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube called "Shrek Super Slam" (released in 2005), and "Shrek's Swamp Karting" (released in 2007).
Both games were developed by Dream Factory. There is also a PSP Minis game titled "Shrek World Tour". An Xbox 360 game titled "Shrek Super Slam Football" was released on October 22, 2008 for the Xbox Live Arcade.
The Game Boy Advance game is a spin-off of the series. In 2007, "Shrek" and "Shrek 2" were released on an updated DVD called "The Best of Shrek".
This disc contains one film each, plus the main characters from both films appear in video skits.
Also in 2007, an Xbox Live Arcade remake of Shrek was released, along with a sequel called Shrek 2.
In September 2009, a brand new CG animated feature length computer animated film was released by DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox.
It was directed by Chris Miller and stars Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona and Eddie Murphy as Donkey. It was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on October 28, 2009.
Another CGI animated feature-length film entitled "Shrek the Third", was released by DreamWorks Animation and 20th Century Fox on April 5, 2011, to coincide with "Fractured Fairy Tales" (August 17) in 3D.
The film features Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona and Eddie Murphy as Donkey again, but also stars Antonio Banderas as a new character who takes over for the exiled Prince Charming if Shrek's child bride is never rescued.

Shrek Movies In Order: How To Watch Chronologically And By Release Date
When you're new to Shrek or Shrek movies, it can be hard to know which movie you should start with.
Fortunately, we have a guide to help you out! Here are movie release dates in order, so that you'll never miss a moment of adventure in the land of Far, Far Away.
From the first Shrek through its four sequels, the first movie can be a bit confusing for newcomers.
But don't worry; we've got you covered! Below is our guide on how to watch every single one of these Shrek movies in order chronologically.
Shrek The Movie (2001) –
This is probably the best place to start if you want an overview of the franchise. Released in 2001, this first movie tells the backstory of Shrek's origins and how he came to be an ogre.
This is the first film that explores how mean a guy can be, but it's also quite good for those who want to see what this whole Shrek thing is about. You won't regret seeing this movie on its own.
Shrek 2 (2004) –
The second movie in our Shrek timeline takes place right after the first one, but we don't get any further insight into Shrek himself here.
Instead, it focuses on Puss In Boots and Fiona as they deal with their respective problems with love.
The sequel was a bit better than the first one, so if you haven't seen the first one, you'll be fine by seeing this one.
Shrek the Third (2007) –
This is the third and most recent installment in our Shrek franchise and it's probably the best of them all. It takes place right after "Puss In Boots" and, like that movie, it deals with love and marriage.
The whole movie feels very much like a fairy tale, but it's also quite funny.
If you're a fan of any of these movies (or if you just want to see what Shrek is all about), then this is definitely worth watching.
